IFEMED Journal Club

The story of the IFEMED Journal Club is akin to the story of the Faculty (now College) of Health Sciences and Nigeria’s. It is the dream of our fathers becoming real. Through the decades, it has grown from a seed to a wonderful tree admired and cherished, with a distinct future of becoming a cedar of Lebanon having her name deeply etched in the sands of time and in the hall of fame.

The originator of the IFEMED vision may never be known for sure, having started in the mind of someone who (fortunately) could not keep it to himself, and shared it with a group of people – which were the then eight executive members of IFUMSA (1975/1976 session).

Undoubtedly, the vision was shared by all with much enthusiasm that it was tabled before the Student Representative Body (the highest decision-making body of IFUMSA). At her sitting on Saturday 22nd of October 1975, the SRB appointed a Medical Journal Committee (MJC) to be overseen by the then Public Relations Officer, Tonye Romeo. The MJC was to conduct a feasibility study and set the Club on course.

By the second week in December of the same year, the MJC had successfully completed her duties by appointing an Editorial Board, Staff Advisers, gotten advert placements and a capable publisher, raised a sum of #60.50 from some willing members of Staff of the Faculty and decided that the Journal would be published biannually – in February and August-two editions per volume.

It was the duo of Drs.Tokunbo Fabamwo and Demola Denloye, who later would become IFUMSA President and Vice President that suggested the name ‘IFEMED Journal Club’, which the MJC accepted.

With all these achieved, they (the MJC) handed over to the editorial Board of IFEMED Journal Club, led by Lanre Alabi, the first Editor-in-Chief, who never lived to see the maiden edition launched. He died in November, 1976. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.

On Tuesday, 15th February, 1977, during the second annual health week tagged: “The Family in Health Disease”, the maiden issue of the Journal was launched. In his speech, Late Prof.T.A.I Grillo – foundation Dean of the Faculty – who launched the Journal, advised the club to choose her executives solely on merit and not on political manoeuvres.

In the pursuit of excellence, the structure of the Club has kept changing. At inception, the Club had an Editorial Board comprising students and Editorial Consultants (which were
lecturers in the College of Health Sciences).

The Editorial Board consisted of the Editor-in-Chief, the Associate Editor-in-Chief, Circulation Managers (3), Business Managers (2), Production Managers (2), Art Directors (2), and a News Editor. With a number of modifications over the years, the editorial board now consists of an Editor-in-Chief, Deputy Editor, Associate Editor, Board Secretary, Graphics Editor, Business Manager, Financial Manager and Publicity Secretary.

Through the decades, IFEMED has proved to be worth her salt by an unrelenting effort in publishing Journals on topical issues peculiar to our environment despite the many hydra-headed monsters that constantly stare her in the face.

Our staff advisers include Prof. Makinde, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex and Dr. Ogundokun , Consultant Family Physician, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, O.A.U., Dr(Mrs) M.Y. Ijadunola, Consultant Community Health Physician, College of Health Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University, Dr.(Mrs) Mapayi, Consultant psychiatrist, College of Health Sciences, O.A.U.

Medivoice

MediVoice is the literary and journalism club of the Obafemi Awolowo University Medical Students’ Association. With a diverse group of writers, it focuses on delivering a wide range of literary content and reports of activities & events.

MediVoice stands in the gap between the Ife Med life and Other Associations on our great campus. We show the world what it is like being a medical student and how our lives go
far beyond the books. We also provide an unwinding space for IFUMSAites through our diverse array of topics spanning lifestyle, sports news, flash fiction, and many more.

We are saddled with the duty of publishing the association’s magazine (CADUCEUS) and bridging the communication gap between classes of IFUMSA to ensure a clear, unified voice that speaks and is heard, reaching every member of our Great Association.

IFUMSA Quiz and Debate Club (IQDC)

The IFUMSA Quiz and Debate Club (IQDC) is the organ of the Obafemi Awolowo University Medical Students’ Association (IFUMSA) that represents the college at academic competitions – quizzes and debates.

The club’s culture is to serve as the academic front of the Obafemi Awolowo University Medical Students’ Association (IFUMSA) at intercollegiate quizzes and debates; to showcase – and bolster – its members’ intellectual prowess at these competitive gatherings; and to maintain a reputable academic image of the Obafemi Awolowo University Medical Students’ Association (IFUMSA) amidst other MSAs in the region and
beyond.

IQDC’s track record of consistent excellence at academic and Debate competitions over the years has cemented its place as a prestigious organ of the association – and indeed, this is not changing anytime soon. The club boasts the membership of teachable and knowledge-driven intellectuals fully committed to the cause of the association.

Membership is opened to IFUMSAites in their second year and above.

The IFUMSA Quiz and Debate Club is also the organizer of the renowned “Medicus”, a biennial intercollegiate quiz competition which it has won twice in the two editions since its conception. The last edition, which took place in February 2022, was arguably one of the biggest and most intense intercollegiate medical competitions in recent years, with schools from five geo-political zones in attendance.
